Radar waves are a form of electromagnetic waves used for level detection in radar level gauges. Similar to visible light, radar waves travel at the speed of light and have frequencies ranging from 300 MHz to 3000 GHz. These waves can penetrate through vapors, dust, and other interferences, reflecting off obstacles. The reflection quality improves with the conductivity or dielectric constant of the measured medium. The time taken for the signal to return is converted into a level measurement by electronic components, ensuring stable and precise readings in a very short time.
The radar level gauge emits narrow microwave pulses through an antenna. When these microwaves hit the surface of the measured medium, they are reflected back to the antenna system, which then transmits the signal to the electronic components for conversion into a level measurement. Due to the high speed of microwave propagation, this process is almost instantaneous.
